Hello fellow bookworms! Today, I’m excited to share my summer reading adventure with you all. While my reading pace took a hit due to a busy work schedule that kept me away from my usual monthly Roundup videos, I still managed to dive into some intriguing books. So, let’s jump right in, and I’ll take you through the highlights of my summer reading list.
1. "Upstairs at the White House: My Life with the First Ladies" by J.B. West (Audiobook)
I kicked off my summer with an audiobook, “Upstairs at the White House.” Working primarily in Washington D.C., I wanted to delve into something educational and relevant to my surroundings. This fascinating book, narrated from the perspective of one of the head butlers at the White House during six different administrations, offered an inside look into the presidency and the inner workings of the White House. I gave it a solid four-star rating for its captivating insights.
2. "Bitter Orange" by Claire Fuller
Next, I picked up “Bitter Orange,” a book that promised a thrilling English countryside adventure but sadly fell flat for me. Despite its beautiful setting, the story didn’t deliver the suspense and excitement I anticipated. I had to give it a two-star rating, as it didn’t meet my expectations.
3. "Formidable American Women in the Fight for Equality from 1920 to 2020" by Elizabeth Griffith (Audiobook)
“Formidable American Women in the Fight for Equality” was a non-fiction gem that I couldn’t get enough of. It provided a detailed exploration of the feminist and Equal Rights Movement, which resonated deeply with me. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in these topics. I gave it a solid four-star rating.
4. "The Summer of Broken Rules" by K.L. Walther
I joined a Taylor Swift-inspired book club and our first pick was “The Summer of Broken Rules” by K.L. Walther. This was a delightful read, filled with Swiftie references and a New England summer vibe. I gave it a full five-star rating, labeling it the perfect Swifty read.
5. "The Cajuns: The History of the French-Speaking Ethnic Group in Canada and Louisiana" by Charles River Editors (Audiobook)
In an effort to reconnect with my Cajun heritage, I dove into “The Cajuns,” a short and informative audiobook about the history of the Cajun people in Canada and Louisiana. While the subject matter was dense, it served as a great starting point for my journey into exploring my heritage. I gave it a three-star rating.
6. "What Happens After Midnight" by K.L. Walther
Continuing with K.L. Walther’s works, our book club read “What Happens After Midnight.” Although I enjoyed it, I didn’t connect with the characters and story as much as I did with her previous book. Still, it’s a great read, especially if you’re a Swifty. I gave it a respectable four-star rating.
7. "Fourth Wing" by Rebecca Yarros
The book that stole the spotlight of my summer was “Fourth Wing.” This fantasy romance had me completely hooked, reminiscent of “Game of Thrones,” “Harry Potter,” and “The Hunger Games” but with a captivating romantic twist. I couldn’t put it down and gave it a well-deserved five-star rating. I’m eagerly anticipating the sequel.
8. "The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes" by Suzanne Collins
As a huge fan of “The Hunger Games” series, I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to read “The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes,” the prequel exploring President Snow’s backstory. While I loved the connections to the original series, I found the book a bit slow at times. Still, it was a worthwhile read, earning it a three-star rating.
9. "With Love from Cold World" by Alicia Thompson
Last but not least, I dove into “With Love from Cold World” by Alicia Thompson. This enemies-to-lovers story, set in Orlando (where I live!), was a delightful experience. The alternating perspectives of the characters made it a true enemies-to-lovers tale. I found it utterly enjoyable and awarded it a glowing five-star rating.
As I transition into the fall and holiday season, I’m on the lookout for new book recommendations.
